Why belong here

St. Cecilia is a mid-sized, family-oriented Catholic parish where the daily rhythm of faith is easy to plug into: three weekend Masses, weekday Mass Tuesday through Friday, an all-day Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration (8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.), and frequent Reconciliation opportunities. The parish runs its own K–8 Catholic school and a Parish School of Religion (PSR), offers Totus Tuus summer programs and a high-school Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM), and provides Bible studies for women including Walking with Purpose. For those called to service, there are active Knights of Columbus and Altar Society groups, a Pro-Life Committee, a parish food pantry (Hope – Food Pantry), and regular volunteering at the Lord's Diner in Wichita — making it easy to belong, form your children in the faith, and serve the wider community.

Parish History

St. Cecilia Parish was founded in 1959 out of St. Anne Parish in Wichita to serve the growing Catholic community in Haysville. The first worship space was a Quonset hut, and the founding pastor was Father Reinhard Eck. The current church was dedicated on August 9, 1964, and is a striking example of Greek architecture clad in St. Meinrad Sandstone, with Italian-sculpted marble and woodwork. The parish's parochial school opened in the church basement in September 1966 under the Sisters of St. Dominic, with a separate school and parish hall following in January 1991. The parish has been served by nine pastors across its history and celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2024.

Patron: St. Cecilia of Rome

St. Cecilia, born around 200–230 AD in Rome, is the patron saint of music and musicians. According to tradition, she vowed her virginity to God but was forced to marry a pagan named Valerian; during her wedding she sang in her heart to the Lord while the musicians played. She later distributed her possessions to the poor, was condemned to death, and was struck three times on the neck — yet survived three more days, during which she arranged for a church to be built on the site of her home. She is buried in the Catacomb of St. Callixtus, and her relics were found incorrupt in the 9th century by Pope Paschal I. Her feast day is November 22.

PSR classes meet Sunday mornings from 9:00–9:50 AM in the parish school classrooms, led by volunteer catechists and classroom helpers who have completed Virtus training. In addition, the parish runs the Totus Tuus summer youth program (catechesis, evangelization, and Eucharistic devotion for young people), a high-school Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) with retreats, service, and social events, and adult formation through RCIA, Women's Bible Study, and Walking with Purpose.

St. Cecilia Catholic School

St. Cecilia Catholic School is the parish's K–8 elementary school, founded in 1966 in the church basement and now housed in the school building dedicated in January 1991. The school's mission is to unite parish and parents to form students academically and spiritually as disciples of Jesus Christ. Enrollment is treated as a partnership: families are expected to attend Sunday Mass, receive the sacraments, participate in parish ministries, and make a stewardship pledge of 8% of gross income to the parish and 2% to their favorite charities. The school is supported in part through the Diocese of Wichita's St. Katharine Drexel Fund.

  • K–8 Catholic elementary school
  • Founded 1966 (basement); current building opened January 1991
  • Principal: Becca Kirchens
  • Stewardship-based enrollment; parish partnership expectations
  • Approx. 117 elementary students, 11 teachers, 40% free/reduced lunch (per diocese data)

Parish Ministries & Service

Beyond the Mass schedule, St. Cecilia's life is shaped by a large network of lay-led ministries. The Knights of Columbus Council #6761 (men, monthly Thursday meetings) supports parish and community works of charity. The Altar Society — open to all women of the parish — cares for the altar and liturgical environment and meets the first Thursday of the month (September through May) with a 7:00 PM rosary. The parish also runs a Pro-Life Committee, a food-pantry collection ministry called Hope, and sends regular volunteer teams to the Lord's Diner in Wichita and to the Center of Hope.

  • Knights of Columbus Council #6761 (men, monthly Thu meetings)
  • Altar Society (women; meets 1st Thu, Sep–May, Rosary 7 PM)
  • Pro-Life Committee (Tue 6 PM rosary at the Grotto; quarterly Wichita prayer outreach)
  • Hope – Food Pantry (non-perishable food collection)
  • Lord's Diner volunteer team — 2nd Thursday evenings, Wichita
  • Center of Hope volunteer team
  • Bereavement / meal support for new mothers and grieving families
  • Environment Committee (church décor)

Pro-Life Apostolate

The Pro-Life Committee is one of the parish's most active and visible ministries. The group leads a rosary every Tuesday at 6:00 PM at the Grotto (weather permitting, otherwise inside the church) and travels quarterly to the Trust Women facility at 5107 E. Kellogg Drive in Wichita to join the first-Saturday rosary — meeting in the St. Cecilia parking lot at 8:30 AM to carpool. The committee has been featured in parish bulletins and is one of the easiest ways for parishioners to get involved in the parish's outreach to the unborn.

  • Weekly rosary: Tuesdays 6:00 PM at the Grotto
  • Quarterly Wichita rosary at Trust Women facility (Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec)
  • Carpool meets in church parking lot at 8:30 AM
