History of St. Catherine Mission Chapel
The Chapel of St. Catherine of Alexandria was built and dedicated in 1952 as a mission of St. Gerard Parish to serve Catholic families in southeast San Antonio's Highland Hills neighborhood. The land was acquired in the late 1940s by Redemptorist priest Rev. Joseph Flanagan, then pastor of St. Gerard's, from parishioners Mr. Edward Pawlik and Mrs. Bernard Wiatrek. When Archbishop Robert E. Lucey canonically erected St. Margaret Mary as a new parish on September 15, 1955, and named Father Edward J. Dworaczyk founding pastor, the St. Catherine Chapel was transferred from St. Gerard's into the care of the new St. Margaret Mary parish, where it has remained as a mission chapel ever since.
