Pilgrimage and Eucharistic Heritage
On May 19, 2024, the chapel gained national attention as the launching point for the Marian Route of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage. Bishop Andrew H. Cozzens of the Diocese of Crookston celebrated the Pentecost Sunday opening Mass at the Pioneers Farm near Shevlin, then led a Eucharistic procession of approximately 1,700 pilgrims into Itasca State Park to the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The event drew an estimated 2,500 Catholics and several bishops from across the Upper Midwest, including Bishops Donald E. DeGrood (Sioux Falls), Daniel J. Felton (Duluth), John T. Folda (Fargo), Michael J. Izen (St. Paul and Minneapolis), Chad W. Zielinski (New Ulm), Donald J. Kettler (St. Cloud), John M. LeVoir (New Ulm, retired), and Richard E. Pates (Des Moines, retired).
