Parish History
Lexington's Catholics originally worshipped as a mission of St. Peter's in Cambridge and later as a mission of the Arlington parish. In 1865 a building was purchased as the first Catholic church in Lexington, and in 1886 the community was formally established as St. Brigid parish. The parish's centennial was marked by the publication of 'Centennial of St. Brigid's Parish, Lexington, Massachusetts: 1875-1975,' and its current church building was dedicated in 1957. St. Brigid also gave rise to two daughter missions: St. Michael's chapel in Bedford (built 1884, later its own parish) and Sacred Heart in East Lexington (opened Christmas Eve 1929).
