History & Heritage
Catholic life in Cuming County began at St. Charles Precinct, where Benedictines from Nebraska City offered the first religious services as early as 1862. A church was erected there in 1867 under Father Erlach, and Father Uhing succeeded him in 1868. By August 1875 Father Uhing had organized the West Point parish (now St. Mary's) and dedicated its first church — then one of the finest north of Omaha. In 1881 construction began on a new church at St. Charles described as 'equal in size to that at West Point,' to be dedicated as St. Boniface Church. The parish grew alongside a Catholic day school, a large Sunday school, and an adjoining cemetery.
