St. Bonaventure Catholic Community is a large, active parish of about 2,600 registered families (and approximately 2,800 per some parish materials) in Contra Costa County, Northern California, nestled in the foothills of Mount Diablo on the border between Concord and Clayton. Founded in 1957, it is known locally as 'the parish that never sleeps' because of the volume of activity on its campus on any given day. Liturgies and faith formation programs are offered in both English and Spanish, and the parish runs more than 100 ministries spanning liturgy, sacramental preparation, faith formation, youth, adult enrichment, and social outreach. It belongs to the Diocese of Oakland and is currently pastored by Fr. Lawrence D'Anjou.

History & Pastor Succession
Founded in 1957, St. Bonaventure has been shaped by a long line of engaged clergy and lay leaders. Fr. Richard Mangini served as pastor for approximately 19½ years before his retirement, prompting the 2015 parish-wide discernment that produced the parish's four cultural pillars. Bishop Michael Barber then appointed Fr. Lawrence D'Anjou as pastor, effective April 2, 2020. The parish continues to grow in families, ministries, and outreach.

Liturgy & Prayer Schedule
The parish offers a full weekly liturgical schedule with five weekend Masses (one in Spanish) and daily Mass Monday through Friday, plus a First Saturday morning Mass. Reconciliation is heard twice weekly, and Eucharistic Exposition & Benediction fills the chapel Monday through Friday. Drive-Thru Prayer and Charismatic Prayer extend the parish's prayer life beyond the church walls, and a Liturgy of the Word & Communion Service is offered both in person and online.

Faith Formation (PreK–5)
Faith Formation has returned to in-person classrooms for the 2025–26 year, with early childhood (PreK & Kindergarten) meeting during the 9am Sunday Mass and elementary sessions offered on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday afternoons. Children are nurtured through interactive activities, Bible stories, music, crafts, prayer, and games — building the foundation for a lifetime of Catholic faith. Children's Liturgy of the Word is also offered at the 9am and 11am Sunday Masses.

Youth Ministry & Sacramental Preparation
St. Bonaventure runs separate Junior High and High School youth programs, with High School including preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Sacramental preparation is also available for children and adults through the parish's Coordinator of Sacramental Prep & Initiation, with sponsor ministry for both Confirmation candidates and adults entering the Church through RCIA.

Music & Liturgical Ministries
Anthony Arteaga serves as Director of Liturgy & Music/Communications Coordinator, overseeing the parish's choirs and liturgical ministers. Three choirs serve the parish: the 9am Mass Choir, the 11am Mass Choir, and the Resurrection (Funeral) Choir. Liturgical lay ministries include Lector, Eucharistic Ministry, Sacristan, and Ministers of Hospitality/Ushers, with the Art and Environment Committee creating seasonal visual reflections of the liturgy.

Adult Faith Formation & Spiritual Enrichment
Adults have multiple opportunities to grow in faith through parish programming. Small Christian Communities meet for faith sharing, and the parish offers Adult Faith Formation led by the Holy Spirit through book studies and other opportunities. The Cenacle Prayer Group meets weekly on Wednesday mornings to pray for priests; the Charismatic Prayer & Worship group gathers Monday evenings with singing, scripture, silent and vocal prayer; and Men's Ministry meets Saturdays 8–9am. A Women's Ministry and a Young Adult Ministry round out adult enrichment.

Outreach, Charity & Social Justice
St. Bonaventure's social ministries meet real needs in Contra Costa County and beyond. The parish Food Pantry distributes groceries in the parking lot every Tuesday from 8:30–10:00am. St. Vincent de Paul cares for neighbors with prayer, food, clothing, and other assistance. Community Outreach supports Winter Nights, Loaves & Fishes, Birthright, and the Gabriel Project. The Ojala Ministry takes adults and teens to build homes in Mexico for one week each spring. Prison Ministry serves Marsh Creek Detention Center on Sunday mornings, and the Respect Life Ministry promotes the sanctity of life throughout the year.

Care for the Homebound, Sick & Bereaved
Parishioners minister to those who cannot easily come to church. The Homebound Ministry visits those who cannot leave home, bringing prayer and the Eucharist. The Nursing Home Ministry regularly visits Diamond Terrace, San Miguel Nursing Home, and Montecito to provide communion services. Healing the Heart (Grief) Ministry trains grief companions, and the Condolence Ministry reaches out to families at the loss of a loved one, hosting the annual Mass of Remembrance on All Souls' Day. The Anointing of the Sick is available in person by appointment.

Parish Life, Fellowship & Stewardship
The parish is widely described as 'the parish that never sleeps.' Hospitality Ministry and Weekend Greeters welcome people at every Mass; Monthly Luncheons and a Social Activities Committee host parish fellowship; the Knights of Columbus bring men together in service; Classy Crafters meet Wednesdays 10am–1pm to make items for the November Craft Sale benefiting the Food Pantry; and Garden Angels care for a one-acre volunteer-tended garden behind the church.
