History and Heritage

Catholic life on the Standing Rock Reservation began in 1876 with the arrival of Benedictine missionary priests; St. Bernard's own sacramental records begin in 1918. For decades the parish was served by Benedictines of St. Meinrad Archabbey who used St. Bernard's as the hub for ministry to outlying Hunkpapa Lakota missions at Little Eagle, Black Horse, Wakpala, Bullhead, and Kenel. By the early 2000s the parish had transitioned to diocesan leadership and today operates as a small but historic mission parish within the Standing Rock cluster.

He is assisted by two Franciscan sisters who form, with him, the Standing Rock Reservation pastoral team commissioned in 2016 by then-Bishop Robert Gruss.

Sunday Mass at St. Bernard is celebrated at 8:00 a.m. Mountain Time. Daily Mass times vary by week; parishioners are encouraged to call the parish office for the current week's schedule and to arrange sacraments (baptism, marriage, anointing of the Sick, RCIA). The two clustered missions keep their own Sunday schedules in Central Time: Assumption of the BVM in Kenel at 12:00 noon and St. Aloysius in Bullhead at 4:00 p.m.

Parish Ministries and Faith Formation

As a small reservation parish, St. Bernard runs a tight but active ministry program centered on the sacraments, lay leadership, and outreach. The sisters and Fr. Jim collaborate closely on religious education for children and adults, including a vacation Bible school in the summer, and on homebound ministry that brings Holy Communion to elderly parishioners and visits the hospitalized in Mobridge and Bismarck (about 80 miles north). RCIA is offered for adults seeking initiation or full communion with the Catholic Church.

The parish and its clustered missions face the same headwinds as much of rural and reservation America—aging demographics, declining attendance, and the social scars of addiction—but remain a steady, welcoming presence. The Franciscan-led pastoral team supplements Fr. Jim's work by hosting communal meals, knocking on doors, and offering prayer and sacramental ministry in smaller communities like Wakpala (which lost its Catholic church in 2016).
