Bernard of Clairvaux (c. 1090 – 20 August 1153) was a Burgundian Cistercian monk and abbot, founder and first abbot of Clairvaux Abbey in 1115. He is venerated as a Doctor of the Church (the 'Doctor Mellifluus'), canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1174, and was instrumental in shaping 12th-century Christian spirituality, preaching the Second Crusade, and helping to draw up the rule for the Knights Templar. His feast day is celebrated on August 20.
