History
The parish was created in 1957, during the post-World War II boom in Catholic construction across Winnebago County. A grade school opened the same year and would serve St. Bernadette families for more than six decades. By the 2010s, declining enrollment led to a multi-year consolidation plan in which St. Bernadette would join Cathedral of St. Peter, St. Edward, and St. James schools in a new regional Catholic grade school for 2019-20. Because too few families committed to a final transition year, the parish accelerated the closure by a year in June 2018, then-pastor Rev. Kenneth Stachyra announcing the shutdown from the altar during Sunday Mass. Since the school closure, the parish has continued its sacramental, formation, and outreach mission from 2400 Bell Avenue.

Music Ministry
Music at St. Bernadette is a long-standing and visible part of parish life, led by Music Director Kathy Cecchetti (815-973-0632). The parish fields multiple ensembles — a Traditional Choir for the 9:30 AM Sunday liturgy (September through June, plus major Holy Days, rehearsing Wednesday evenings 6:30-8:00 PM in church), a Contemporary Ensemble for the Saturday 4:45 PM liturgy (rehearsing 30 minutes before Mass or as needed), the Resurrection Choir for parish funerals, and auditioned cantors. Instrumentalists of strings, wind, brass, percussion, and piano are invited to contribute their gifts, and all ensembles are open to high-school-age through adult members.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
Following the 2018 closure of St. Bernadette Catholic School, the parish sustains its youth formation through a Parish Religious Education program serving students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
