About St. Augustine Parish

St. Augustine is a small Catholic parish in Waynesville, Warren County, Ohio, about 30 miles northeast of Cincinnati. It is part of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and, since the Beacons of Light pastoral initiative, is clustered with St. Columbkille Parish in Wilmington and Holy Name Chapel in Blanchester under the shared name Holy Saints of God, Family of Parishes. The parish gathers weekly for a Saturday Vigil Mass and a Sunday morning Mass, supported by daily Communion Services and Tuesday evening Mass.

History

Catholic life in Waynesville traces to 1867, when Archbishop John Purcell purchased a lot on West High Street. A church was built on the site in 1877 to serve scattered Catholic families in the rural area. The earliest Masses were rare occasions celebrated by visiting priests; regular Sunday coverage came between 1936 and 1951, and a resident pastor was finally assigned in 1957. By the mid-1970s the parish had grown enough to relocate to its present home at 5715 Lytle Road; the original 1877 chapel was sold in 1976 and is now a commercial building. GCatholic dates the parish's founding to 1876.

  • 1867 – Archbishop John Purcell of Cincinnati purchases the West High Street lot

  • 1936–1951 – Visiting priests offer Sunday Mass on a more regular (though still occasional) basis
  • 1957 – First resident pastor assigned; mission becomes a parish
  • Mid-1970s – Parish relocates to 5715 Lytle Road
  • 1976 – Original 1877 chapel sold and converted to commercial use
