About St. Augustine Parish

St. Augustine is a welcoming Catholic community in the Barry Square neighborhood of Hartford, called by God to share Christ's message through lives of love, service, and care for all. The parish motto on the website greets visitors in both English and Spanish: 'Bienvenidos a la Parroquia de San Augustín!' Founded in 1902, it has served Hartford's south end for more than 120 years and today welcomes worshippers from many cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

History

St. Augustine Parish was established on August 31, 1902, with the appointment of its first pastor, Fr. Michael W. Barry. At founding the parish had about 100 families / 630 people and worshipped at the Washington Street School until a basement chapel was completed in 1903. The current Romanesque-style church on Campfield Avenue was dedicated in June 1912 by Bishop John J. Nilan. A parish school staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery was built by 1928. In 1934 the Hartford City Council renamed the surrounding neighborhood 'Barry Square' in honor of the founding pastor. The parish merged the former Saint Anne / Immaculate Conception Parish into its territory in 2017.
