About St. Anthony · Winters, California

St. Anthony Parish is a Catholic parish in the rural farming community of Winters, California, in Yolo County, established January 1, 1913 as a mission offshoot of the older Woodland Parish. The parish is part of the Diocese of Sacramento (Yolo Deanery) and is twinned with St. Martin Mission Church in nearby Esparto, together serving the small communities of Winters, Madison, Capay, Guinda and Esparto. The parish is bilingual (English and Spanish), celebrating Masses in both languages every weekend, and runs Catholic Faith Formation (CCD/RCIA) programs for children and adults under a dedicated coordinator and deacon.

Why belong here

St. Anthony is a small, bilingual parish where English- and Spanish-speaking families from Winters and the surrounding Capay Valley can worship side by side every weekend. It offers the full sacramental life of a diocesan parish — daily bilingual Masses, Saturday confessions, weekly Eucharistic Adoration, a school-age Catholic Faith Formation (CCD) program and adult RCIA/OCIA — under a pastor and deacon who are visibly present in the parish office on Main Street.

Parish History

The first Catholic church in Winters was built in 1909 and dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua on October 29, 1911 by Bishop Thomas Grace of Sacramento — the same day the first Confirmations were ever celebrated in Winters. On January 1, 1913 the church was formally constituted as a new parish under Rev. Father J. F. Quinn, with about 100 baptized Catholics in Winters, Davis, Madison, Capay and Guinda. Davis and Esparto later split off into their own parishes and missions, leaving today's St. Anthony parish serving Winters and the Capay Valley alongside its sister mission, St. Martin's in Esparto.

  • Esparto's St. Martin Mission dates back to a 1905 wooden church moved to Esparto in 1945

Clergy & Staff

The parish is led by Pastor Fr. Carlo Paul G. Tejano and supported by two deacons — Deacon Jorge Villalobos (Parish Deacon) and Deacon Al Llenos (who also serves as Operations Manager). Lay staff include Parish Secretary Marisela Garcia and Religious Education Coordinator Dawn Barrera, who together keep the parish office, formation programs and sacramental prep running out of the Main Street office.

Faith Formation & RCIA

Faith Formation is described by the parish as one of the most important tenets of its mission. Programs serve both children and adults interested in learning about or returning to the Catholic faith. The parish explicitly lists Catholic Faith Formation (CFF)/Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC), and the Rite/Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA/OCIA) as its core offerings. The coordinator is Dawn Barrera (CFF) and Erin Hasbrook (RCIA/OCIA). Deacon Jorge also teaches the parish's Adult Confirmation classes in preparation for adult Confirmation at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento.
