History of St. Anthony's Parish
Catholic life in Wellington began in the early 1880s when the first Mass was celebrated in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Monley, with services later held in a schoolhouse. The first St. Anthony's church was built in 1884 along with an eight-room school and rectory, but those early buildings were later lost through mortgage foreclosure. From 1898, Wellington went without Mass for three years, with the faithful gathering in private homes and lodge halls until Father James Hays completed a frame church at the corner of C and Seventh in 1906, by which time the parish numbered about forty families.

Present Churches & Pastorate
Father Maguire shepherded St. Anthony's for approximately twenty-five years and oversaw construction of the present St. Anthony church in 1948. Father Schmidt, who followed him, built the parish school and is remembered for the hard work of preparing it — reportedly doing much of the painting himself for the fall term. St. Rose of Lima Church was built at about the same time and was dedicated on the same day in 1949, joining the two congregations that today share one pastorate at 210 N. B Street.

Parish Life & Fellowship
One of the parish's distinctive traditions is the free community lunch served in the Parish Hall following the Friday 12:10 PM Mass — an open-table welcome to parishioners and visitors alike.
