History & Significance

St. Anthony Shrine is a Catholic parish church in Emmitsburg, Maryland, rooted in the early Maryland Catholic families and Jesuit missions of the 1700s and the ministry of Fr. John DuBois (founder of nearby Mount St. Mary's). The present church was built after the parish was separated from Mount St. Mary's College in 1894, with the church dedicated on October 26, 1897 under first pastor Fr. John Manly. Its cemetery dates to 1806 and holds graves of Mount St. Mary's faculty and students and several members of the family of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The parish serves the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
