About St. Anthony Parish
St. Anthony was founded in 1923 and uses its parish church as a spiritual focal point to foster growth among its members. Located at 3074 Madison Street in Riverside, it is one of the oldest parishes in the city and is now part of the Diocese of San Bernardino. The community is bilingual, celebrating Mass in both English and Spanish across the week, and the Mercedarian Fathers (Order of Our Lady of Mercy, O. de M.) presently administer it. The parish describes itself as a community that puts its church at the center of parish life, with clergy and staff ready to serve families through sacraments, education, and pastoral care.
History of St. Anthony
St. Anthony was founded in 1923 as a Mexican parish serving Riverside's Casablanca district. The original adobe church served the community for more than fifty years before being razed in the summer of 1975 to make room for a new building. The present church, dedicated on February 29, 1976 by Bishop Leo T. Maher, is of modern design with a high-pitched roof supported by wooden arches. Its bell tower was specially designed to house the original bells from the adobe church, preserving a direct link to the parish's founding generation. A procession of former pastors joined Bishop Maher for the dedication Mass, at which the bishop counseled the congregation to make the new church the spiritual center of their lives and homes.
