St. Anthony of Padua Church is one of two worship sites of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel – St. Anthony of Padua Parish, a Roman Catholic community in the Diocese of Youngstown in Youngstown, Ohio. Founded in 1898 to serve Italian immigrants in the historic Brier Hill neighborhood, the parish is deeply rooted in Italian-American tradition and Marian devotion. The merged parish (since 2012) unites the Brier Hill St. Anthony of Padua Church with the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel downtown. It is currently pastored by Very Rev. Msgr. John Zuraw, J.C.L., V.G., Pastor & Rector.

History of St. Anthony of Padua Parish
St. Anthony of Padua Parish was established in June 1898 by Bishop Ignatius Horstmann of Cleveland (Youngstown being then part of the Diocese of Cleveland) to serve Italian-speaking Catholic immigrants. Rev. Antonio Petillo organized the community by purchasing the former St. Ann's Church on West Federal Street in the Brier Hill district and rededicating it to St. Anthony of Padua. The second pastor, Rev. Carlo Doria (1901), saw the parish flourish until his death in 1907, after which a brief schism led to the formation of a separate St. Rocco's congregation. Fr. Emmanuel Stabile (1907–1911) restored unity with Rome and, in 1908, began a mission church in East Youngstown that would become Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In 1912 the two Italian-American churches merged into the present-day parish (2012), with Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio Jr. as first pastor. Our Lady of Mount Carmel was elevated to a Minor Basilica in 2014 and affiliated with the Major Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome in 2024.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel – St. Anthony of Padua Parish Today
Today the parish is officially called the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel – St. Anthony of Padua Parish. It consists of two worship sites: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Minor Basilica in downtown Youngstown near the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood (and minutes from Youngstown State University), and St. Anthony of Padua Church in the historic Brier Hill neighborhood. The parish is part of the Diocese of Youngstown and currently in a regional collaboration with St. Columba Cathedral Parish, St. Angela Merici Parish, and St. Patrick Parish under a regional ministry model.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
The parish runs a religious education program called Light of Faith & Family, designed for children from Pre-Kindergarten through High School, helping parents fulfill the promise made at Baptism to raise their children in the Catholic Faith. The Office of Religious Education is located at the St. John Paul II Center (323 Via Mt. Carmel) and can be reached at 330-743-3508. Adult Faith Formation opportunities are also offered to help parishioners grow in Christian maturity.

Becoming Catholic (OCIA)
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the parish's process for unbaptized adults who wish to receive the sacraments of the Catholic Church, as well as for Christians already baptized who are interested in the Catholic Faith. Inquirers at any stage are invited to contact the Parish Office.
