History of the Logan Mission
Catholicism in the Logan area is older than the town itself. Ranchers in what would become Quay County were already Catholic before Tucumcari existed, and the first church in the county was a Methodist congregation. A priest from Puerto de Luna, Father Alfonso Halterman, traveled into the region three times a month to celebrate Mass in people's homes. Once the original Quay County courthouse was built in 1904, local Catholics began using it for Mass until a permanent church could be constructed. The first Mass at St. Anne's in Tucumcari was celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent in 1910, and the founding pastor, Father Jules Moline, named the parish after his mother. From the start, the same priest would go on to San Jon and Logan to celebrate Mass, beginning the missionary outreach that continues today through St. Anthony Mission.
