Parish History
The parish's history stretches across three churches and more than a century of central Texas Catholicism. The first wooden structure, dedicated November 1, 1909 by Bishop William J. Shaw of San Antonio and named Immaculate Heart of Mary, was repeatedly destroyed by hurricanes and finally leveled by a cyclone in 1925. A successor mission church — St. Joseph's — was built in 1926 and torn down in 1959 when Highway 81 was constructed. The original brick church bearing the present patron's name was dedicated December 18, 1960, and was joined by the Parish Hall and Catechetical Center on December 5, 1984. The current church building was dedicated on March 28, 2004 by Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond, then Archbishop of New Orleans and a former Auxiliary Bishop of Austin.
