History of St. Anthony Parish
St. Anthony was established as a Catholic parish in October 1905, when the Rev. Mathias Graeve came to Lismore to serve the small farming congregation that had been meeting in a two-story frame building shared with the parish school. Almost immediately Fr. Graeve organized the building of a much larger and grander church, financed in part by parishioner donations and in part by donated labor from early settlers. The cornerstone of that building was laid on November 17, 1911, and Bishop Patrick Hefferan dedicated the finished church on June 13, 1912 — the Feast of St. Anthony — a date the parish has continued to honor.
