Parish History

Catholic life in Cumberland began in 1883 when early Catholics of varied backgrounds began worshipping together. They built St. Mary's of the Wayside (dedicated by Bishop Kilian Flasch on October 24, 1888) and, in 1885, Italian immigrants established St. Anthony Abbot one mile south of town. The two parishes merged in 1973 as the Cumberland Area Catholic Community; St. Mary's was sold in 1984, and the parish reclaimed the St. Anthony Abbot name in 1986. A parish center was added across from the church in 1993.
