St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church is a Byzantine-rite (Ukrainian Greek Catholic) parish in the Youngstown, Ohio area, serving faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Josaphat of Parma. Originally begun as a mission of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, it was elevated to full parish status in 1975 and celebrated its 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) in 2017. The parish is led today by Administrator Fr. Lubomir Zhybak, a married priest from Ukraine who also serves Holy Trinity in Youngstown, assisted by Deacon Thomas Bury. History of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church
St. Anne began as a mission of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown, founded in 1911. After Msgr. Leo Adamiak's arrival in 1950, Holy Trinity grew so quickly that in 1960 the 33-acre Rose Lake grounds at Kirk and Raccoon Roads in Austintown were purchased for $90,000. A $500,000 Building Fund Project was launched March 3, 1963, and on September 3, 1963, Archbishop Ambrose Senyshyn approved the multi-purpose building. The name 'St. Anne' was chosen in a 1964 poll (top three: St. Anne, St. Leo, St. Matthew) and confirmed by Archbishop Senyshyn in November 1964.
Building and Dedication
Ground Blessing Ceremonies took place June 20, 1965, before a rugged cross and altar on what is now the St. Anne complex. The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated on August 14, 1966, the residential home on the property was blessed as a convent on August 18, 1966, and the entire complex was solemnly dedicated under the Patronage of St. Anne by Archbishop Senyshyn on June 25, 1967. The project, when completed and fully equipped, cost $700,000.
Byzantine Architecture and the Iconostasis
The building design is influenced by Byzantine architecture and includes four autonomous sections: chapel, school, social hall, and administrative section. The chapel seats 600 and features a beautiful iconostasis painted by Christine Dochwat. The school section was noted for two serene courtyards creating a peaceful atmosphere for students.
St. Anne's Ukrainian Catholic Elementary School
St. Anne's Ukrainian Catholic Elementary School opened September 7, 1966, with the main objective of providing a Christian environment for children to study, love, and live the Ukrainian Catholic faith — spirituality, language, and tradition. The faculty included Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate. After nearly four decades, the school was closed in 2005 for financial reasons.

Elevation to Parish Status
Less than a year after the school opened, on March 15, 1975, St. Anne was officially elevated from mission to full parish status by Archbishop Senyshyn, who simultaneously assigned Rev. Myron Kosmoski as the first pastor. Geographic boundaries were later drawn up with the bishop's approval.
Parish Impact on the Eparchy
The parish substantially affected the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Josaphat of Parma. New prayer services initiated at St. Anne were used in parishes throughout the eparchy, and a Divine Liturgy book compiled at St. Anne was approved by Major Archbishop Cardinal Myroslav Lubachivsky in July 1980. The parish served as an internship parish for seminarians Mark Morozowich and (now Fr.) Michael J. Polosky (ordained April 28, 1991), and nurtured the diaconate vocations of Deacon Joseph F. Poklemba and Deacon Donald M. Billy.
Clergy and Pastoral Succession
After Fr. Walter Wysochansky's long tenure, Msgr. George Appleyard took over in 1999; subsequent leaders included Fr. Joe Tamburo, Fr. Andrew Marko, Fr. Peter Tomas, the late Fr. Richard Whetstone (d. 2015), and Fr. Ignatius Kury (2012–2014). Since January 14, 2015, Fr. Lubomir Zhybak — a married priest from Ukraine — has served as Administrator of both St. Anne and Holy Trinity parishes, assisted by Deacon Thomas Bury.

Golden Jubilee (50th Anniversary)
In 2017, St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church celebrated its 50th anniversary — a milestone the whole parish looked forward to. The Golden Jubilee was marked with the wider Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church community.
