St. Anne is a small Catholic parish located at 410 Broad Street in the village of Edgewood, Effingham County, Illinois. It was founded in 1864 by eleven Catholic families and has remained an active faith community ever since. Our History
St. Anne's history stretches back to the spring of 1864, when about eleven Catholic families within fifteen miles of Edgewood asked Bishop Peter Joseph Baltes of Alton for permission to organize a parish. The Bishop entrusted the new mission to the Franciscan Fathers of Teutopolis, and at a first meeting Louis Schoen and John Casey helped organize the community and pledged $400. A small frame church was erected in the West End of Edgewood at a cost of $1,000.
Mission Era (1864–1879)
For its first fifteen years the Edgewood community was a mission cared for by the Franciscan Fathers of Teutopolis. After 1879 it passed into the hands of secular priests, who attended it from nearby towns.

Visiting-Priest Era & Neoga Years
In 1893 the mission was attached to Neoga parish and was visited twice a month by a succession of priests from there. This era lasted until the parish grew large enough to call its first resident pastor.

Building the Present Church
After Bishop James Ryan appointed Rev. Edmond Flynn as the first resident pastor, a parochial residence was built. In 1915 Rev. Daniel Doyle — who took charge on September 30, 1914 — erected the present church at a cost of $8,000, finishing it with a fine high altar and new stained-glass windows.

Pastor John Marion Era (1919–)
Rev. John Marion was appointed in July 1919. Under his leadership the remaining debts on the parsonage and the new church were paid off, and he organized the parish's signature lay societies: the Holy Name Society for the men, the Altar Society for the women, and a branch of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Bishop James A. Griffin visited in 1924 and confirmed a class of forty-six children.

Sacraments
The Tri-Parish community prepares parishioners for all seven sacraments. Parents seeking Baptism must be registered members and complete a preparation class with Fr. Ron Lorilla. First Communion and Confirmation are celebrated annually for 3rd graders who have completed at least one year of PSR preparation. Couples should contact Fr. Ron at least six months before a wedding. The Anointing of the Sick is available on request, with emergency contact via Fr. Ron's private line.

Faith Formation & PSR
Religious education across the Tri-Parish is coordinated by Katie Bauer. PSR classes meet on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., beginning after Labor Day, and serve as the preparation pathway for First Communion and Confirmation.

The Tri-Parish of St. Clare, St. Mary, and St. Anne is in the middle of a three-year Capital Campaign running from May 2025 through July 2027. The campaign supports the long-term needs of all three parish communities, including St. Anne in Edgewood.
