History of St. Anne Parish
Catholic life in the Sanborn area began in 1892, when Fr. Chrysostom Verwyst, OFM, celebrated the first Mass at the home of Joseph Dausault. In November 1895, Mr. and Mrs. J. Roehm deeded four acres of land to Bishop James Schwebach of La Crosse for the use of a Catholic church and cemetery, and the parish is dated to that year. Fr. Patrick Degraa dedicated the finished church, built under Dausault's direction, in 1899. Originally staffed by Franciscan Fathers from Ashland, the parish became a mission of St. Ann in Saxon in 1905 and came under diocesan priests after the Diocese of Superior was erected.
