Parish History
St. Ann's Catholic Church was founded in 1878 in the Crawford County town of Vail, Iowa, the same year the region struggled through a devastating grasshopper infestation that made it hard for farm communities to raise money for church construction. From its earliest decades the parish was a hub of religious and civic life: in 1885 a brickyard operated just north of the church, and the annual Catholic Fair became a signature community event, with the March 1892 Vail Observer reporting that Father Murphy netted nearly $1,300 from that year's fair. Mission community ties to neighboring parishes eventually led St. Ann's to be served together with St. Rose of Lima in Denison under the Diocese of Sioux City.

St. Ann's School
St. Ann's School opened on October 6, 1890, with an enrollment of 60 students under the supervision of the pastor, Reverend James Murphy. Four Franciscan Sisters of Dubuque staffed the school at its founding. Within a year or so, the Sisters of St. Francis of Clinton, Iowa, established their first mission west of the Mississippi River in Vail through St. Ann's. The school's high school—the Eagles—was later absorbed by Kuemper Catholic in Carroll in 1960 as the Diocese of Sioux City consolidated Catholic secondary education.

She retired at age 90 following the parish's final regular Sunday Mass on July 7, 2024, though she remained available to play for weddings and funerals held at the church.
