History of the Catholic Presence in Osage County
St. Ann's existence is rooted in more than 175 years of Catholic ministry among the Osage people. The mission church stands in a region where Catholicism arrived with Jesuit missionaries. Fr. John Schoenmakers, SJ — the 'Apostle to the Osage' — established a permanent mission and schools for the Osage in southeast Kansas in 1847. When the Osage Nation was relocated southward into Indian Territory (today's Osage County, Oklahoma) in the 1870s, Catholic ministry followed them, and Immaculate Conception Parish in Pawhuska was established in 1887 to serve the Osage Catholics of the area. From that parish, mission churches like St. Ann in Shidler were founded to bring the sacraments to smaller, more distant communities in the county.

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pawhuska is the parent parish of St. Ann. The present Gothic-style brick church is the third built by the parish; construction began in 1910 and was completed in 1915. The church is known by many as the 'Cathedral of the Osage' — not only for its cathedral-like shape but also for its central role in Osage Catholic history. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is especially renowned for its 22 stained glass windows, designed by the Bavarian Art Glass Company of Munich, Germany, and installed between 1910 and 1919. Visitors of all faiths come each year to view the windows and interior.
