St. Ann Catholic Church is a bilingual Catholic parish serving the south side of Salt Lake City from its campus at 450 East 2100 South. Operated under the Diocese of Salt Lake City, it is a community that celebrates Mass in both English and Spanish and runs the adjacent Kearns–St. Ann School. The parish is led by Fr. Dominic Sternhagen, pastor, with parochial vicars Fr. Carlos Guzman, RCJ, and Fr. Ryan Jimenez, RCJ — two Rogationist priests from the Philippines — and Deacon Carlos Cortez. Sunday Masses are offered at 10:00 am and 5:30 pm in English, plus a 12:00 noon Mass in Spanish, with a Saturday Vigil at 5:00 pm.

Parish Identity & History
St. Ann Catholic Church was canonically erected in 1917 by Bishop Glass of the (then) Diocese of Salt Lake City. It serves as the parish church for the historic Kearns–St. Ann's campus, which grew from the 1891 St. Ann's Orphanage founded by Bishop Lawrence Scanlan with the patronage of Senator Thomas Kearns and his wife Jennie. The present-day church building, designed by William Wing Louie of Scott, Louie & Browning Architects & Engineers, was dedicated on July 26, 1968, and was conceived specifically to embody the liturgical vision of the Second Vatican Council.

Architecture of the 1968 Church
Architect William Wing Louie drew his design inspiration from the Prayer over the Gifts in the Roman Missal — 'O Lord, I love the beauty of your house, the dwelling place of your glory' — and from the liturgical changes of Vatican II. The plan centers every seat on the altar through twin naves, while a sweeping structural-steel roof supported on steel columns and brick walls rises above the sanctuary. A skylighted baptistery with masonry walls and metal-and-colored-glass grillwork sits on the liturgical axis at the entrance; the altar is backlit by panels of stained glass.

The Kearns–St. Ann's Orphanage & School Heritage
St. Ann Parish is closely tied to the historic Kearns–St. Ann's Orphanage on the same campus, founded by Bishop Lawrence Scanlan in 1891 and built in 1899 in an eclectic Chateauesque style designed by Carl M. Neuhausen (architect of the Thomas Kearns Mansion and the Cathedral of the Madeleine). A $55,000 gift from Jennie Judge Kearns purchased the land and funded construction. The orphanage was staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Cross and, in 1918, also became a day school. In 1953 the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word assumed leadership, and on September 19, 1954, the orphanage was converted to a parochial school — St. Ann's School. In 1999, after a renovation, it was renamed Kearns–St. Ann School to honor the Kearns family's original patronage.

Pastoral Leadership
The parish is led by Fr. Dominic Sternhagen, who was ordained on August 14, 2018, at the Cathedral of the Madeleine by Bishop Oscar Solis, served two years as parochial vicar at the Cathedral, and was named pastor of St. Ann in 2022. Born in Austin, TX in 1985, he attended Christ the King High School Seminary in Mission, British Columbia, then spent twelve years with the Legionaries of Christ, studying and working in Connecticut, New York, Ireland, Rome and Philadelphia before joining the Diocese of Salt Lake City in 2015 and studying at Mount Angel Seminary. He also serves as Director of Vocations for the diocese and as pastor of the adjoining Kearns–St. Ann School.

Parochial Vicars — The Rogationist Fathers
Two Rogationist Fathers of the Heart of Jesus (RCJ) — Fr. Carlos Guzman, RCJ, and Fr. Ryan Jimenez, RCJ — serve as parochial vicars at St. Ann. Both arrived in the Diocese of Salt Lake City from the Philippines in March 2024. The Rogationists are a religious order of priests and brothers founded in Italy by St. Hannibal Di Francia on May 16, 1897, dedicated to praying for vocations, assisting orphans and youth in need, and evangelizing the poor and underprivileged. Before coming to Utah, Fr. Guzman was rector of the Rogationist College in the Philippines; Fr. Jimenez professed vows in 2008 and was ordained in 2015.

Office Hours
The parish office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm (closed for lunch from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm). The office is closed on Wednesdays for worship and events. Bilingual reception is available — Susan Gonzales is the pastoral secretary (Spanish) and Eileen Driscoll handles English inquiries.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
The parish runs a Religious Education program in both English and Spanish. Natasha Gallegos ([email protected]) leads the English program, and Conception San Juan ([email protected]) directs Catecismo Español. The program also prepares students for Quinceañera and supports OCIA (the Spanish-language catechumenate) under Conny San Juan.
