St. Ann Catholic Church is a welcoming Roman Catholic parish in Hagerstown, Maryland, belonging to the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Established on June 11, 1966 by Cardinal Lawrence Shehan and dedicated in 1970, the parish was carved out of the territory of St. Mary's Parish to serve the growing Catholic population of northeast Hagerstown and Washington County, including Maugansville. Today St. Ann draws worshippers from across the tri-state area — Hagerstown/Washington County, southern Pennsylvania, and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia — and describes its mission as 'A Welcoming Catholic Community That Loves God, Forms Disciples, Serves Others, Changes Lives.' Our Story — From St. Mary's Mission to St. Ann Parish
For decades, Catholics of northeast Hagerstown and Washington County belonged to St. Mary's Parish. As the Catholic population grew, the schools on the St. Mary's campus became overcrowded. Under the late Msgr. J. Francis Leary, 15 acres on the north side of Hagerstown were purchased and St. Maria Goretti High School opened in 1955. Mass began to be celebrated in the school, then in a new 'gymnatorium' added in 1965 under Msgr. Daniel M. McGrath. On June 11, 1966, Cardinal Lawrence Shehan formally established St. Ann Parish to serve Catholics north of the Western Maryland and Pennsylvania railroad lines and in Maugansville. The cornerstone was laid in 1968 and the church was dedicated September 13, 1970. The parish has grown ever since — through the building of the Parish Center (1991), the Manalis Center (2006), and a choir loft and pipe organ, and through the dedication of generations of Catholic families across the tri-state region.
The Church Building
The church of St. Ann was designed by the Baltimore architectural firm Gaudreau and Gaudreau, with the design itself largely determined by Cardinal Lawrence Shehan. Built in the years immediately following the Second Vatican Council, the worship space reflects the Council's liturgical reforms. The total cost of the church was approximately $826,000, of which brothers John and Thomas Pangborn of Hagerstown together gave $373,000. The cornerstone was laid in 1968 and the building was dedicated on September 13, 1970. A choir loft and pipe organ were later added.
Parish Campus
St. Ann's 15-acre Oak Hill Avenue campus has grown with the parish. Beyond the church, the campus includes the Parish Center (built 1991), which houses the Chapel where daily Mass is celebrated, the Manalis Center (added 2006, named for Msgr. Edward W. Manalis, pastor 1991–2001), the Nursery, classrooms, and gathering spaces. There are North and South parking lots, with three entrances into the Church and a handicapped-accessible door at the rear of the Parish Center/church near the storage shed.
Faith Formation for Children & Teens
St. Ann's Family Formation program is a family-based catechetical program for families with children of all ages. The parish runs three age-appropriate youth tracks: Junior Believers (Pre-K through 5th grade), EDGE (Grades 6–8), and TIM Team (Teens in Ministry, Grades 9–12). High school teens also serve as peer mentors for the younger programs. Sacramental preparation (First Communion, Confirmation) is coordinated by Meghan Cordell. RCIC (for children over the age of reason who are unbaptized) and RCIT (for unbaptized teens) are offered as part of the OCIA process.
Becoming Catholic — OCIA (RCIA)
Adults interested in the Catholic faith, baptized Catholics who have not yet received Confirmation and Eucharist, or those returning to the Church are invited into St. Ann's OCIA process (formerly called RCIA). Music Ministry
St. Ann's Music Ministry is led by Kevin Gorman, Director of Music Ministry. A choir loft and pipe organ were added to the church as the parish grew, supporting both the contemporary 9:00 AM Mass and the more traditional liturgies.

Outreach & Charity
St. Ann's outreach extends well beyond Hagerstown. The parish's 'Little Angels' program feeds 720 Haitian children, and teens take part in mission trips and local service. The parish also maintains a Prayer Network, supports the homebound with Holy Communion visits, and engages in a wide menu of fellowship, family, and adult faith programs.
Visiting St. Ann
St. Ann warmly welcomes visitors and travelers in the Washington County area. Weekend Masses are held in the Church with entrances from the North and South parking lots, two front doors, and a handicapped-accessible door at the rear of the Parish Center/church. Daily Mass is held in the Chapel inside the Parish Center (enter from the South lot, take stairs or elevator; the Chapel is on the right). The parish recommends arriving 10–15 minutes early. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the parish office or say hello after Mass.
