History of St. Ann Parish
The first St. Ann Church was built in 1905 to serve 40 Catholic families, mostly French Canadians, working at the local lumber mill. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company donated the land, and Missoula architect A.J. Gibson designed the building. It was initially under the direction of Jesuit fathers from St. Francis Xavier in Missoula and later attached to St. John the Baptist parish in Frenchtown. In 1938, after years of growth and requests, the Helena Diocese officially separated St. Ann as its own parish, appointing Father John J. Connolly as administrator. A new, larger church was built and dedicated in 1940, with Father Connolly moving into the rectory. He retired in 1945, and Father James Major became the parish’s longest-serving pastor, serving until 1968.
