St. Angela Merici is a Roman Catholic parish in Florissant, Missouri, in the North County Deanery of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Founded in June 1962 by Archbishop Joseph Ritter, the parish opened its doors with about 200 families and quickly grew into a thriving faith community that today includes more than 1,200 households. The parish operates a parish school serving Pre-K through 8th grade and offers a full schedule of daily Mass, weekend Mass, the Sacrament of Penance, Eucharistic Adoration, and dozens of parish ministries and organizations.

Parish History

Saint Angela Merici Parish was founded in June 1962 by Archbishop Joseph Ritter of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, with Father Paul Kersgieter as its first pastor. The parish opened with about 200 families, and the first Masses were celebrated in the Rectory until the Church was completed and dedicated in September 1965. The school was established around the same time by the Ursuline Sisters of Owensboro, Kentucky, opening with 163 students in grades 1–4.

  • June 1980 — Portable classrooms added for Kindergarten
  • June 1992 — Parish celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a Mass by Archbishop Justin Rigali; North County Deanery vision enacted and parishioners from Transfiguration and St. Christopher welcomed, bringing total to over 1,200 households
  • June 2002 — Buckley Montine Center (gymnasium) dedicated; additional classrooms, library, and music room added
  • May 2004 — Father Ferdinand Wesloh began serving as pastor (after Father Kersgieter's 30-year tenure)
  • July 2008 — Father Thomas Keller appointed fourth pastor
  • June 2012 — Parish celebrated its 50th Anniversary
  • July 2014 — Monsignor Matthew Mitas appointed fifth pastor
  • July 2024 — Father Peter Faimega appointed sixth pastor

Parish School

St. Angela Merici Parish School serves students from Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten through 8th grade, combining a religion program, a rigorous academic curriculum, and a focus on self-discipline, personal responsibility, and self-evaluation. The school was founded by the Ursuline Sisters of Owensboro, Kentucky, and today enrolls more than 200 students. Principal Mary Ann Kauffman notes the school features a modern computer lab, a traveling laptop cart, full campus networking, a student-run broadcast system called SAM (with student news broadcasters and a weather commentator), and five smart boards to enhance learning.

Devotions & Prayer Life

Daily prayer is woven into parish life at St. Angela Merici. Morning Prayer is recited at 7:00 AM on weekdays and 9:30 AM on Sundays, with the Rosary prayed at 7:15 AM on weekdays, 4:30 PM on Saturdays, and at 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM on Sundays. A weekly Eucharistic Adoration is held on Tuesdays (8:30 AM, per the Archdiocesan schedule).
