Parish History
St. Andrew the Apostle was created on June 5, 1952 by Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel after landowner Ernest B. Norman Sr. offered to donate land for a church and school to serve the post-war boom in Lower Algiers. The first Mass was celebrated in the Flattmann home on June 29, 1952, and Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve 1952 was the first service in the parish's first church — cleaned and decorated by parishioners using refinished pews from a synagogue in Houma. The school opened September 14, 1953, and the parish has been served by a notable succession of pastors who built up the Eton Street campus, the school, and a wide range of ministries. The parish history was chronicled in a 50th-anniversary volume by Fr. Paul Hart in 2002.

St. Andrew the Apostle School
Founded in 1953, St. Andrew the Apostle School is a Roman Catholic school located on the parish campus in Algiers, serving children in Pre-K2 through seventh grade. The school is dedicated to providing a comprehensive Catholic education that fosters the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social development of the whole child. Religious Education and CCD
The parish's Religious Education Center (phone 504-393-0140) serves children who do not attend Catholic school. The CCD program covers grades 1 through 12 with two tracks: an elementary program (grades 1–6) meeting Tuesdays 4:30–5:30 PM, and a Junior/Senior High program (grades 7–12) meeting Tuesdays 7:00–8:00 PM during the school year. Lessons follow a sequence parallel to child development, integrating Catholic theology based on scripture and tradition. The current Director of Religious Education and Youth Ministry is Frances Harrison.

Youth Ministry – SANYO and Jr. CYO
SANYO – St. Andrew's New Youth Organization – is the parish CYO for 8th through 12th graders, with a separate Jr. CYO for 6th and 7th graders. The ministries participate in social, spiritual, service, and sports events throughout the year, joining other CYOs across the Archdiocese for the annual Youth Conference and Summit High School Ministry Nights. Monthly Youth Masses are held at the 5:00 PM Sunday Mass (e.g., June 14, July 19, August 9), with meetings before or after Mass. Wednesday 'Dock Nights' are held weekly from 6:00–7:30 PM for high schoolers, with 6th–7th graders joining the first Wednesday of each month.

Parish Ministries and Community Life

The Knights of Columbus Council #9107 (founded 1985) hosts a famous Friday-night Lenten fish fry (except Good Friday) featuring golden fried fish and award-winning gumbo. The annual Superfest, held in partnership with Gulf Coast Bank & Trust, is the parish's signature fundraiser — the 2026 edition is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 11 AM–9 PM. Foundations and Stewardship
The St. Andrew School Foundation, launched in 1988 by Msgr. Tomasovich, raised $1 million to supplement teacher salaries and provide scholarships, with the principal never to be touched. Today the parish supports its mission through online giving and Venmo donations, encouraging parishioners to 'simply give what you can, and God will surely bless you.' The parish's online giving platform and bulletin support ongoing operations, employee pay, and ministry outreach.
