Parish History

St. André Bessette Parish was formed in July 2011 through the merger of St. Francis Xavier, Ecorse, and Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge. The new name was selected by Archbishop Allen Vigneron from a list proposed by parishioners. A transitional parish council was established with representatives from both parishes. Father Cornelius Okeke was installed as the first parish priest on November 23, 2013. The parish continues to grow and serve its community through ministries, sacraments, and outreach programs.

Sacraments

The parish offers all seven sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist/First Communion, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders. Baptisms are typically held on the third Sunday of the month and require preparation classes for parents and godparents. First Communion and Confirmation preparation is coordinated through Faith Formation. Marriage requires a 9-month appointment with the pastor and at least one party must be an active registered member.

Ministries

The parish offers a variety of ministries including Faith Formation (formerly Religious Education), RCIA, Music Ministry (with bilingual leadership), St. Vincent de Paul, Parish Center Kitchen, Bulletin, and Maintenance & Housekeeping. These ministries support the spiritual, educational, and practical needs of the community.
