Our Story — A Parish Rooted on Louisville's East End Since 1959
St. Albert the Great was created in 1959 by Archbishop John A. Floersh to serve the rapidly growing East End of Louisville. Its 149 founding families gathered for Sunday Mass at Stivers School (now Walden School) while Father Robert Willett — the first pastor — shepherded the new community. The parish takes its name from St. Albertus Magnus (1206–1280), the Dominican scholar, scientist, and educator whose legacy of teaching continues through the parish school.

Building the Campus: Church, School, and Parish Halls
Groundbreaking for the original church and school was on February 14, 1960. Over the following decades the campus grew to serve a parish that swelled from 149 founding families to more than 1,400 by the mid-1990s and now serves roughly 4,500 parishioners. The current worship space — a 1,000-seat church — was dedicated October 22, 2000 by Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly, O.P., and the original worship space was rededicated as the O'Bryan Center for parish offices the same day.

St. Albert the Great Parish School (Preschool–Grade 8)
The parish school has been serving the Louisville community for more than 60 years and is a vital ministry of the parish. It is a three-time recipient of the National Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence (2004, 2015, 2024), drawing about 756 preschool through eighth-grade students from 23 different ZIP codes while maintaining a close, family-like culture. The school partners closely with parish life — students attend weekly Mass and participate in service and sacramental preparation — and offers robust academics including STREAM projects, Algebra I in 8th grade, and Spanish instruction that lets roughly half of graduates test out of Spanish I in high school.

Faith Formation, Sacraments, and Children's Ministry
Religious Education and Evangelization, along with Children's Ministry and Sacramental Preparation, help parishioners of all ages grow in faith. Children's Ministry is led by Sr. Sarah Yungwirth, O.S.B. Sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation is offered through the parish, and weekly Mass is part of school life. Parish Life: Fish Fry, Summer Picnic, Athletics, and Seniors
St. Albert's community life is anchored by two signature parish-wide events. During Lent, the St. Albert Athletic Ministry hosts the popular Friday Fish Fry, the group's main annual fundraiser. Each summer the parish hosts its largest fundraiser — a three-day Summer Picnic (Family Night Thursday; main picnic Friday and Saturday 5:00–11:00 PM) with games, raffles, a hole-in-one contest, food, and beverages. The Athletic Ministry (SAAM) coordinates 17 youth sports throughout the year, and an active seniors group of about 300 members keeps older parishioners engaged.
