History

St. Agnes was established in October 1923 as a parish of what was then the Diocese — and soon after the Archdiocese — of San Antonio, serving the immigrant and working-class families of the city's west side. Through the 1920s the surrounding area was still partly rural, with open fields, dairy cows, and scattered homes; the parish grew rapidly with the Spanish-speaking Catholic population. Archbishop Arthur Jerome Drossaerts worked closely with the pastor of St. Agnes, including recruiting Spanish-speaking Carmelite friars from Oklahoma to assist the parish's Spanish-speaking ministry. That ministry legacy continues today, with Mass regularly celebrated in both English and Spanish.
