History

St. Augustine Parish was founded in 1849 to serve German and Irish immigrants in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. The first Mass was offered in a private home on Boston Road, and a small wooden church was built at Franklin Avenue and Jefferson Street in 1850. A brick church replaced it after an 1894 fire; the Sisters of Charity opened the parish school in 1887. As the neighborhood changed, the parish adapted—forming the first Catholic gospel choir in the Bronx in 1972 and renovating the church to reflect African-American heritage. Declining attendance and structural problems led the Archdiocese to close the St. Augustine church building in 2011; the congregation merged with Our Lady of Victory in 2012, forming St. Augustine–Our Lady of Victory Parish.
