History & Significance

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Manorville, Long Island, New York, was founded by the Montfort Missionaries (Missionaries of the Company of Mary), inspired by St. Louis Marie de Montfort. It grew from 70 acres in Eastport donated in 1953 by Crescenzo and Angelina Vigliotta and "The Rock" overlooking Moriches Bay given in 1957 by the Harrison family. Its centerpiece is an 18-foot statue of the Virgin Mary, gifted by the Vigliotta family and designed by Raphael DeSoto, erected in 1975. It serves the Diocese of Rockville Centre as a center of Marian devotion.

Why belong here

The Shrine offers a rare combination of authentic Montfortian Marian spirituality, daily Mass in multiple languages, and seventy acres of outdoor devotional space — including the Rock, the Rosary Walk, the outdoor Stations, and the Holy Stairs — making it ideal for anyone seeking a day of pilgrimage, retreat, or simply quiet prayer in nature. Pilgrims, retreatants, and parish groups come here to make or renew the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary, attend Eucharistic Adoration, hear preached retreats in English and Spanish, and participate in special feast-day liturgies like the Queenship of Mary and the Feast of the Assumption. Because admission is free and the Shrine relies entirely on donations, visitors can drop in for a single Mass or spend the whole day walking the grounds, visiting the Gift Shop, and attending confession on Fridays.

History & Founders

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Island was born of a preaching mission: when two Montfort priests — Fr. Roger Mary Charest, SMM, and Fr. Francis Tomai, SMM — proclaimed the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary on Eastern Long Island, the Vigliotta family responded by donating 70 acres in 1953. Four years later, the Harrison family of East Moriches donated the great Rock itself. The Madonna statue followed in 1975 and the Shrine was dedicated in 1976. For more than seventy years the property has been continuously developed and maintained by the Missionaries of the Company of Mary as a center of Marian spirituality for the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

  • 1953 — Crescenzo & Angelina Vigliotta, Sr. donate 70 acres to the Montfort Missionaries
  • 1957 — Mr. & Mrs. John Harrison of East Moriches gift the Rock and surrounding acreage
  • 1953 onward — Fr. Roger Mary Charest, SMM and Fr. Francis Tomai, SMM articulate the Shrine's vision
  • 1975 — 18-foot statue of the Madonna and Child (Rafael Desoto, Patchogue) enthroned on the Rock
  • 1976 — Blessed Sacrament Chapel built; Shrine formally dedicated October 2, 1976
  • 1985 — Large Pietà statue set on the knoll to greet visitors

The Grounds & Devotional Landscape

Spread across 70 wooded acres, the Shrine is a walking campus rather than a single church building. The 18-foot statue atop the Rock anchors the property and is the destination of every visit; from there, paths fan out through the Pine Barrens to the Pietà, the Avenue of Saints, the Rosary Walk, the Stations of the Cross, and the Holy Stairs. Pilgrims are encouraged to walk, pray, and leave petitions at any of the outdoor shrines.

  • The Rock (with 18-foot Madonna and Child statue)
  • Pietà statue on the knoll (1985)
  • Avenue of Saints — statues where visitors leave flowers, rosaries, and petitions
  • Outdoor Rosary Walk winding through the woods
  • Outdoor Stations of the Cross
  • Holy Stairs — massive concrete staircase leading to a likeness of Jesus on the Cross
  • Man-made cavern of the empty tomb inscribed 'He has risen'
  • Blessed Sacrament Chapel (1976)

Marian Devotions & Feast Days

Because the Shrine exists to promote the Marian spirituality of St. Louis de Montfort, the liturgical calendar is shaped around Marian feasts. The Queenship of Mary (August 22) features the Renewal of the Act of Total Consecration; the Feast of the Assumption (August 15) and the Feast of St. Louis de Montfort draw retreatants and pilgrims; and the monthly Candlelight Rosary at the Rock offers a meditative evening devotion through the warmer months.

  • Queenship of Mary (Aug 22) — Renewal of the Act of Total Consecration
  • Feast of the Assumption (Aug 15) — Rosary and Holy Mass
  • Feast of St. Louis de Montfort — special Montfortian celebration
  • Candlelight Rosary at the Rock (monthly, with reflection on each decade)
  • Annual Motorcycle Blessing

Sacraments & Special Liturgies

In addition to its regular Mass and confession schedule, the Shrine serves as a regional site for special sacramental celebrations — most notably the Good Friday liturgies that historically draw up to 10,000 pilgrims to the property. The Shrine is not a territorial parish in the ordinary sense; its sacramental life is centered on pilgrimage, retreat, and formation rather than parish registration.

  • Good Friday: 12:00 PM Stations of the Cross (English)
  • Good Friday: 12:00 PM Servicio de Celebración de la Pasión (Spanish)
  • Good Friday: 4:30 PM Celebration of the Passion (English)
  • First Friday & First Saturday devotions
  • Misa en Honor a la Virgen del Cisne (with procession)
  • Memorial Mass intentions available on request

Ministries & Retreat Programs

The Montfort Preaching Team, an English- and Spanish-speaking ministry of the United States Province of the Company of Mary, is headquartered at the Shrine. The team conducts parish missions, days of recollection, retreat preaching, and programs of formation in the spirituality of St. Louis de Montfort — most especially the preparation for and living of the Total Consecration of oneself to Jesus through Mary. The Shrine also welcomes catechist retreats and young-adult retreat days.

  • Montfort Preaching Team (parish missions, retreat preaching, Total Consecration preparation)
  • Marian Retreat Days for Young Adults (ages 20s & 30s)
  • Catechist Retreats (hosted for parishes such as St. Leo the Great, Queens, NY)
  • Group visits and pilgrimages (reservations required for groups of 15+)
  • Volunteer Spring Clean-Up Day

Facilities: Gift Shop, Snack Bar & Pilgrim Hall

The Shrine's visitor facilities center on the Gift Shop, which stocks religious items from around the world, and the Snack Bar, which serves ice cream, water, and snacks on weekends during the season. The Pilgrim Hall provides indoor space for Mass when weather prevents outdoor worship, and during the 2015–16 Jubilee of Mercy its door served as an official Holy Door. Picnic tables on the grounds allow groups to bring their own lunch.

  • Gift Shop — religious items from around the world (Mon–Fri 10–3, Sat–Sun 10–4)
  • Snack Bar — ice cream, water, snacks (Sat–Sun 12–4, seasonal)
  • Reception Office — Mon–Fri 10–3, Sat–Sun 10–4
  • Public Restrooms — daily 10 AM–3 PM

  • Pilgrim Hall — indoor Mass and meeting space

Memorials & Giving

Because the Shrine is supported entirely by donations, several giving programs allow individuals and families to leave a permanent mark on the grounds. The Memorials program is administered through a dedicated email address (memorials@ourladyoftheisland.com).
