About Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa · Merrillville, Indiana
The Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Merrillville, Indiana, is a diocesan Marian shrine of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gary, run by the Polish Province of the Society of the Divine Savior (Salvatorians, SDS) at 5755 Pennsylvania Street. Erected as a parish church in 1983 and solemnly decreed a Diocesan Shrine on December 8, 2011 by Bishop Dale J. Melczek, it houses a copy of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa that was consecrated in Rome in 1982 by Blessed Pope John Paul II, alongside the world-famous "Panorama of the Millennium" — a monumental mobile Nativity scene. The shrine is the spiritual hub of Polish-American Catholicism in the greater Chicago–Northwest Indiana region, drawing thousands of pilgrims each year, especially for the annual 33-mile Marian Walking Pilgrimage from Chicago to Merrillville held each August on the Feast of the Assumption.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa is the spiritual heart of Polish-American Catholicism in the Chicago–Northwest Indiana corridor, offering daily Mass and confessions in both Polish and English (with a Latin Mass on Sundays), virtually uninterrupted Eucharistic Adoration in the Divine Mercy Chapel, and a year-round calendar of Marian devotions including weekly Novenas to Our Lady of Częstochowa and Divine Mercy and monthly Fatima devotions from May through October. Belonging here means joining the worshipping community that hosts the famous 33-mile Walking Pilgrimage from Chicago each August on the Feast of the Assumption, the IX Pilgrimage and Blessing of Polish Truckers in June, the XVII Motorcycle Pilgrimage, and the traditional Opłatek Christmas gathering in the Salvatorian Millennium Hall — all rooted in the devotion to a Black Madonna icon blessed by Pope John Paul II.

History of the Shrine
The Polish Salvatorian Fathers arrived on the Merrillville property in the late 1950s and quickly established a chapel and monastery to serve the Polish-American community of the Chicago–Northwest Indiana corridor. In the 1966 Jubilee Year marking the Millennium of Christianity in Poland, the community began formal expansion under Fr. Józef Zuziak SDS, who arrived in 1969 and would lead the development of the site for decades. The Black Madonna icon that anchors the shrine was consecrated in Rome in 1982 by Blessed John Pope John Paul II. Construction of the present church began in August 1982; the cornerstone was laid on November 7, 1982 and the building was consecrated on August 28, 1983 as a jubilee gift of Polish-American Catholics for the 600th anniversary of Jasna Góra. The church was decreed a Diocesan Shrine on December 8, 2011 and the icon was solemnly crowned on August 25, 2013.
Diocesan Shrine Status (2011)
On December 8, 2011 — the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the 130th anniversary of the founding of the Society of the Divine Savior — Bishop Dale J. Melczek of the Diocese of Gary formally decreed the church a Diocesan Shrine. The decree cites the veneration of the Black Madonna image, the Fatima Chapel with its Rosary and Way of the Cross Stations, the daily Mass schedule in Polish and English, the availability of confession and spiritual direction, the annual pilgrimage from Chicago, and the monthly Fatima devotions from May to October.
- Decree date: December 8, 2011
- Officiant: Bishop Dale J. Melczek, Diocese of Gary
- Marian image: Black Madonna of Częstochowa, consecrated in Rome 1982 by Blessed John Paul II
Coronation of the Icon (2013)
On Sunday, August 25, 2013 — the 30th anniversary of the church's dedication — Bishop Melczek presided over the solemn coronation of the Icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa. About one thousand faithful attended the Mass, which was concelebrated by Fr. Piotr Filas SDS (Provincial Superior), Fr. Łukasz Kleczka SDS (Superior and guardian of the Sanctuary), and numerous other Salvatorians, with Discalced Carmelite Fr. Franciszek Czaicki OCD among the guests. The crowns were so large they had to be installed the day before; they are reported to be among the largest in the world.
Shrine Architecture and the Panorama of the Millennium
The shrine church was designed as a Marian worship space with the famous Panorama of the Millennium as its signature interior feature. The Panorama is a monumental mobile Nativity scene depicting a thousand years of Polish Christianity: mechanized figures in regional Polish costumes, colorful robes, music and lighting surround the Holy Family and Christ Child at center stage. Heroes from both Polish and American history (including Tadeusz Kościuszko and Kazimierz Pułaski) appear, and the 30-minute presentation ends with a recorded message and blessing from Saint John Paul II followed by the Polish National Anthem. The Panorama is widely described as the world's largest mobile Nativity scene. The grounds also include the Divine Mercy Chapel for perpetual-style Eucharistic Adoration, the daily chapel in the religious house, the original Fatima Chapel in the monastery park, the Salvatorian Millennium Hall for community gatherings, Stations of the Cross and Rosary Stations throughout the park, and the local cemetery.
- Panorama of the Millennium — last Sunday of the month after 12:00 PM Mass (Polish), Fatima Sundays, and by arrangement for groups (English)
- DVDs of the Panorama in Polish and English available for purchase
Languages of the Liturgy
The shrine is genuinely trilingual: Polish-language Masses (the core of its identity as a Polish-American Marian shrine), English-language Masses (welcoming the wider Diocese of Gary faithful and visitors), and the Traditional Latin Mass (offered since January 1, 2023 by St. Joseph Oratory, an apostolate of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest that relocated to the Salvatorian grounds from St. Joseph's in Hammond).
Marian Devotions and Novenas
The shrine keeps a constant Marian rhythm: the Holy Rosary is prayed every Sunday at 8:30 AM (English) and 11:30 AM (Polish, except in Lent); the Litany to the Blessed Virgin Mary is prayed Monday–Friday at 6:30 PM, Saturday at 4:30 PM, and after the Sunday 12:00 PM Mass; a weekly Novena to Our Lady of Częstochowa is offered at the Wednesday 7:00 PM Polish Mass; and on the third Friday of each month a Novena Mass to Divine Mercy is offered at 7:00 PM. The annual Novena for the Feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa runs August 23–31, and an Easter Novena of nine Masses in honor of the Risen Lord is offered for the intentions of the faithful.
- Weekly Novena to Our Lady of Częstochowa — Wednesday 7:00 PM
- Monthly Novena to Divine Mercy — third Friday 7:00 PM
- Annual nine-day Novena — August 23–31 for the Feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa
- Easter Novena to the Risen Lord — nine days of intention Masses
Fatima Devotions (May–October)
From May through October the shrine hosts monthly Fatima Sundays: Holy Mass at 9:00 AM in English with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; Polish Rosary at 11:30 AM; 12:00 PM Polish Mass; procession to the Fatima Chapel; and the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00 PM. The full pilgrimage schedule for 2026 is May 17, June 14, July 5, August 9, September 13, October 11, and November 1 (Prayer for the Faithful Departed).
Annual Pilgrimages and Special Events
The Merrillville Salvatorians organize or host a year-long calendar of pilgrimage events for Polish Catholics across several U.S. states. The flagship event is the annual Marian Walking Pilgrimage — a 33-mile trek on foot from St. Michael Church in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood to the shrine in Merrillville, ending with the closing Mass on the Feast of the Assumption weekend (August). Other annual events include the XVII Motorcycle Pilgrimage (Motocyklowy Zlot Gwiaździsty) with the blessing of motorcycles, the IX Pilgrimage and Blessing of Polish Truckers in June, the regional Orawa Group "Baby" cultural performance, the Corpus Christi Eucharistic Procession to four altars, and the traditional Opłatek Christmas wafer-sharing in the Millennium Hall.

Panorama of the Millennium — Visitor Experience
The Panorama is presented in Polish on the last Sunday of every month after the 12:00 PM Mass (outside Lent), on Fatima Sundays after the procession, and for groups by prior arrangement; English presentations are available for groups by prior arrangement. Each 30-minute presentation tells a thousand years of Polish Christian history through mechanized figures, regional costumes, and music, ending with a recorded blessing from Saint John Paul II and the Polish National Anthem. DVDs of the Panorama in both languages are sold at the shrine.
The Salvatorian Fathers (Society of the Divine Savior)
The shrine is staffed and administered by the Society of the Divine Savior (Salvatorians, SDS), a Roman Catholic religious congregation founded by Blessed Francis Jordan in 1881 in Rome. The Merrillville community is part of the Polish Province and serves Polish-American Catholics across four U.S. congregations: Merrillville (Indiana and Illinois), Verona (New Jersey, New York and Connecticut), Texas and Florida. Fr. Ireneusz Bem SDS serves as the current Superior, with Fr. Stanisław Pieczara SDS as Treasurer and Shrine Curator, Fr. Józef Musioł SDS as auxiliary priest and sacristan, and Brother Piotr Bogawski SDS. Fr. Józef Zuziak SDS (1934–2021), the shrine's founder-builder and former rector superior, is buried at the local Merrillville cemetery.
St. Joseph Oratory (Traditional Latin Mass)
Since January 1, 2023, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has operated St. Joseph Oratory on the Salvatorian grounds. The Traditional Latin Mass is offered every Sunday at 8:00 AM, first Fridays at 6:30 PM, and on holy days and special feasts. Confessions are heard at least 30 minutes before every Mass. The oratory relocated to the shrine from St. Joseph's in Hammond per a letter dated December 1, 2022. The oratory office (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday/Wednesday/Friday) is staffed by Office Administrator Renee Neupauer and serves under Chaplain Reverend Canon David Le.
