History of the Mission

Before Santa Ana had its own home, Catholics in Tremonton gathered for Sunday Mass in the basement of the local Methodist Church on Tremont Street. The mission was built through the generous donations of many parishioners and supporters, and a local business listing records the parish as established at its present address in 1994. In thanksgiving for the new building, parishioner Jose Martinez was among those who organized the very first 'Walk With Christ' Easter pilgrimage from Saint Henry's in Brigham City to the Tremonton mission.

Walk With Christ — Easter Pilgrimage

Each year during Holy Week / Easter season, members of the Box Elder Catholic community walk the roughly 21 miles from Saint Henry's Church in Brigham City to Santa Ana Mission in Tremonton as an act of thanksgiving and sacrifice. The tradition began as an expression of gratitude for the newly built Santa Ana Mission and has continued for more than 30 years, with only the COVID-19 years of 2020–2022 halting the walk. Pilgrims — sometimes as many as 100, sometimes as few as 20 — take turns carrying a large wooden cross (about 10 feet long) and a smaller crucifix bearing a figure of Jesus. The pilgrimage has become the spiritual signature of the mission and the broader Brigham City–Tremonton Catholic community.

  • 21-mile route: Saint Henry Church (Brigham City) → Santa Ana Mission (Tremonton).
  • Pilgrims take turns carrying a ~10-foot cross and a smaller crucifix.
  • Begun in gratitude for the building of Santa Ana Mission.
  • Interrupted only in 2020, 2021, and 2022 due to COVID-19.
  • Has drawn between roughly 20 and 100 participants in various years.
