Patron Saint: Pedro de Jesús Maldonado (1892–1937)

The parish takes its name from a Mexican priest who was ordained in El Paso itself and later martyred for the faith during Mexico's religious persecutions. Born in Chihuahua on June 15, 1892, Pedro began seminary at 17 and was known for deep Eucharistic devotion. Ordained at St. Patrick Cathedral in El Paso by Bishop Anthony Joseph Schuler, S.J. on January 25, 1918, he returned to minister in Chihuahua but was arrested and killed on February 10–11, 1937, during the Cristero persecution — after receiving Holy Communion in his final moments.

Relics of the Saint in El Paso

The primary relics of San Pedro de Jesús Maldonado rest in a wooden urn in the Cathedral of Chihuahua. On January 25, 2018, the 100th anniversary of his priestly ordination, the Archdiocese of Chihuahua donated a secondary urn containing remains to the Diocese of El Paso.
