San Isidro Catholic Church, located at 2310 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (formerly Hammondville Road) in Pompano Beach, Florida, is a multicultural Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Miami. Long classified as a 'mission,' it was canonically elevated to parish status on March 30, 2025, by Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who installed Father Wilfredo Contreras as its first pastor. Roughly 90% Hispanic with smaller English-, Spanish-, and Creole-speaking contingents, the faith community of more than 1,800 registered parishioners supports over sixty ministries serving the surrounding neighborhoods of northwest Broward County. Worship is celebrated bilingually, with lively charismatic Spanish liturgies (including liturgical dancers and a live-streamed television ministry that broadcasts the Sunday Spanish Mass globally), as well as quieter English Masses in the parish chapel.

Parish History
From makeshift Masses in the Pompano Beach labor camp, homes, under trees, and an old schoolhouse in the 1960s, San Isidro was formally founded as a mission on March 19, 1970, under Fr. Jeremiah Singleton, with St. Isidore the Laborer as patron. A wooden house on three acres purchased by the archdiocese became the first rectory and Saturday-evening worship space; the first permanent church and parish hall were dedicated in 1975 under Fr. Bernard Kirlin and Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll, funded in part by a $50,000 gift from Carl Koch of Assumption Parish. A larger church was blessed on December 12, 1984, by Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy, and the modern circular sanctuary — with its steeple-shaped skylight and road-facing statues of the Sacred Heart and Mary Help of Christians — was dedicated in 1999. After leadership from Fr. Ricardo Castellanos and Fr. Miguel Gómez, Fr. Wilfredo Contreras arrived in 2017 and was installed as the community's inaugural pastor on March 30, 2025, when Archbishop Thomas Wenski elevated the mission to a canonical parish.

Patron Saint: St. Isidore the Laborer (San Isidro Labrador)
The parish takes its Spanish name from St. Isidore the Laborer (c. 1070 – May 15, 1130), a Mozarab farmworker born to a poor family near medieval Madrid. He worked as a day laborer on the estate of Juan de Vargas; legend holds that angels plowed alongside him when he lingered at prayer, and that miracles — including healing his employer's horse and bringing his daughter back to life — won over skeptical witnesses. He and his wife, Santa María de la Cabeza (María Torribia), both canonized, lived austere peasant lives of generosity to the poor and dedication to the Church, and were canonized together on March 12, 1622, by Pope Gregory XV. St. Isidore is the patron of farmers, peasants, day laborers, and bricklayers; patron of Madrid; and (in 1947) official patron of the U.S. National Catholic Rural Life Conference. His liturgical feast is celebrated on May 15.

Faith Formation and Religious Education
Luz A. López directs Religious Education for the parish, which currently serves 213 children. The formation pipeline includes ongoing catechism for First Communion and Confirmation, an altar-server program with 75 children, a youth group for teens, and a young-adult ministry. Sacramental preparation for adults (RCIA) and for marriage is handled through the parish office. All adult volunteers who serve in ministries involving children or vulnerable adults must complete the Archdiocesan VIRTUS safe-environment program before serving.

Music Ministry and Liturgical Arts
Moisés Herrera leads the parish Music Ministry, with praise-and-worship teams animating the charismatic liturgies — especially the Spanish Masses. Liturgical dancers perform in the aisles to engage worshippers in clapping along to the beat, and at major celebrations such as the March 30, 2025 elevation Mass, the music and dance were part of the 'pomp and pageantry' noted by the Archdiocese. Well-dressed ministers serve as lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at the weekend Spanish Masses; at the English Masses the Gloria and Creed are projected on the wall so the assembly can sing and pray together.

Outreach, Charity, and Community Service
Originally founded to serve Spanish-speaking migrant farm workers, San Isidro continues its mission to the poor and most vulnerable of northwest Broward. With more than sixty ministries, the parish operates an array of services — material assistance for those in need, outreach that follows parishioners into their workplaces in lawn care, building maintenance, construction, business ownership, accounting, and nursing, and pastoral care to the sick and homebound. The parish's television ministry extends that outreach far beyond the Archdiocese of Miami, broadcasting live the Sunday Spanish Mass around the world.

Getting Involved and Safe Environment
San Isidro welcomes new volunteers into its sixty-plus ministries. Adult volunteers who serve in any ministry involving children or vulnerable adults are required to complete the Archdiocese of Miami's VIRTUS online safe-environment course and remain in compliance with archdiocesan regulations; those who fail to comply cannot serve in those ministries.
