The Patron Saint: San Felipe de Jesús
The parish takes its name from St. Philip of Jesus (San Felipe de Jesús, 1572–1597), a Mexican-born Franciscan missionary who became one of the Twenty-six Martyrs of Japan. He is honored as the first native-born Mexican Catholic saint and is the patron saint of Mexico City. He was beatified in 1627 by Pope Urban VIII and canonized in 1862 by Pope Pius IX. His feast day, February 5, is the anniversary of his martyrdom by asphyxiation in Nagasaki, and is widely observed in Mexican and Mexican-American Catholic communities.
