History
Founded in 1771 by Padre Junipero Serra, the mission was relocated in 1773 due to unstable water. It saw major construction phases through the 1800s, including its iconic Great Church (completed 1813). After secularization in 1834, it fell into disrepair until restoration efforts began in the 1900s. The Franciscans resumed ministry in 1928, and in 2005, the Diocese of Monterey took over caretaking. The mission remains a living parish and historic site.
