Parish History
Syracuse was a mission station from 1888–1889 and 1898, served from Meade Center and Great Bend. The congregation began to form in 1906 when Father Joseph Bogner was assigned to Garden City. He and parishioners raised $500 to build a church, which began construction in August 1907. The church was blessed in 1908 by Father William Farrell and named St. Raphael at the request of a donor. Mass was held monthly until 1927, then weekly until 1940. The original frame church was enlarged in 1943, and a new rectory was completed in 1948. The Precious Blood Fathers served until 1990, when diocesan clergy resumed pastoral care. A new church was built during Father Jerome Wolf’s pastorate, dedicated in 1963. The parish includes Hamilton County Catholics in Kendall and Coolidge, though some Coolidge families transferred to Holly, Colorado, in 1976.
