History & Significance

St. Patrick Church, the first Catholic church in the North End of Bridgeport, Connecticut, was established as a parish in 1889 from a division of St. Augustine's Cathedral parish. Mass was first held in a basement church designed by James Murphy of Providence; the cornerstone of the present upper church, designed by Dwyer and McMahon of Hartford, was laid in 1910, with the dedication Mass offered in November 1913. In 2011 the parish merged with St. Augustine's to form The Cathedral Parish, now serving Catholics of the Diocese of Bridgeport with Masses in English, Spanish, and a monthly Igbo-Nigerian liturgy.
