History of the Catholic Presence in Meeker
Catholic missionary work in the Meeker area predates the founding of the modern parish. In the early 1890s, following the 1891 opening of Lincoln County to white settlement, Benedictine Father Felix DeGrasse, O.S.B. traveled on horseback from Sacred Heart Mission in Guthrie to both Chandler and Meeker, celebrating Mass in the homes of local Catholic families. He continued these missionary trips until 1895. St. Michael was already an established mission church by June 1949, when Father John L. Walch resided in Chandler and served St. Michael in Meeker as a mission. Today the parish continues that long mission tradition under the care of the National Shrine.

St. Michael is a mission church of the National Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague, located at 304 Jim Thorpe Blvd., Prague, OK 74864. The Shrine itself is housed in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and was formally established in 1949 after Father George V. Johnson promised to dedicate the new church to the Infant Jesus of Prague if the parish could complete its construction. Bishop Eugene J. McGuinness dedicated the church on February 22, 1949, and on August 16, 1949, the Carmelite General in Rome granted permission to establish the Association of the Infant Jesus of Prague in the parish. From that foundation, the National Shrine has grown into a place of pilgrimage recognized during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy (2016) and the Holy Year 2025.
