Our History
St. Mary’s Catholic Church was established under Bishop Hennessey of Dubuque, Iowa, on September 15, 1874. The first frame church building was erected in 1875 at 2nd and Grimes for $800.00, with Father J. Barry as pastor and 20 families as members. In the 1880s, Father Shiffmacher served multiple nearby areas, with Corning being most promising. A cemetery was purchased before 1883. In 1902, a new church was built at 3rd and Grimes for $7,000, with Father William Quinn as pastor. The parish built a parsonage in 1902. A parochial school opened in January 1920, taught by Dominican Sisters. In 1959, 6.4 acres were purchased for the current church site, which was built in 1962 and dedicated in 1962. Major renovations occurred in 1978 and 1989, and the Gathering Space was renovated in 2000–2001.
