Why belong here
Saint John the Baptist was created specifically so Romanian Greek-Catholic families in Orange County would not have to choose between their Byzantine liturgical heritage and life in Southern California. The mission offered the Divine Liturgy in Romanian under a priest of their own rite, celebrated feasts of the Byzantine calendar, and stood as a cultural bridge for a diaspora community — advocating, for example, on behalf of Romanian families seeking restitution of property confiscated by the communist regime. For Romanian Catholics in the Tustin, Laguna Hills, Irvine and Santa Ana area, it was a place to pray in their own language, raise their children in the Byzantine faith, and stay connected to the Romanian Catholic identity of the Eparchy of Saint George in Canton.

History of the Mission
The mission was opened on Sunday, 29 November 2009, with Father Cristian (Chris) Terheș as its founding administrator. It grew to roughly 100 families drawn from across the Tustin, Laguna Hills, Irvine and Santa Ana area. The community became a vocal advocate for the rights of Romanians whose property had been confiscated by the communist regime, and in 2012 it wrote to the Romanian Prime Minister opposing a proposed low-value restitution plan. After Father Terheș was relieved of his priestly functions in 2019 for entering politics, the mission was listed in Romanian Catholic directories as closed.

Worship and the Byzantine Liturgical Tradition
As a mission of the Eparchy of Saint George in Canton, the community followed the Byzantine liturgical tradition of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. The Sunday Divine Liturgy was celebrated in Romanian, in continuity with the centuries-old Byzantine rite used by Romanian Catholics in Transylvania and the rest of Romania.
- Sunday Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM in Romanian
- Byzantine (Greek-Catholic) liturgical rite
- Patronal feast: Saint John the Baptist (June 24)
Clergy
From its founding in 2009 until 2019, the mission was led by a single administrator, Father Cristian (Chris) Terheș, an Eastern Rite Catholic priest originally from Romania. After his 2019 release from priestly functions, the mission was listed as closed in the Romanian Catholic directory.
- Rev. Chris (Cristian) Terheș — Administrator, 2009–2019
Location and Facilities
Because it was a mission rather than a constituted parish, the community did not have a purpose-built church. Instead, it worshipped in the chapel of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac School, a Roman Catholic primary school on East Main Street in Tustin. The mission's official mailing address was in Santa Ana.

Romanian Community and Cultural Mission
Beyond the Sunday liturgy, the mission served as a cultural anchor for Romanian Greek-Catholics in Orange County. The community publicly advocated for restitution of property confiscated from Romanian families by the communist regime and was praised in the U.S. and Romanian press for its civic engagement. The mission's Facebook page (Misiunea Sf-Ioan Botezatorul-Orange County) was its main online gathering point.
