Parish Mission & Identity

St. Ignatius Parish describes itself as 'a community called to proclaim all the Catholic Church holds, teaches, and believes to be revealed by God.' Rooted in the Eucharist, the parish asks God to make its members brothers and sisters of Jesus, marked by true charity and the joy of knowing, loving, and serving Him. Tucked into Spring Hill, the parish calls itself a vibrant community where faith flourishes through Mass, fellowship, and service — and where 'all are warmly welcomed who seek to grow in faith.'

History

Founded in 1947 to serve the growing Spring Hill section of Mobile, the parish expanded rapidly with the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in 1952, who opened the parish school. By 2016 the congregation had outgrown the original buildings, and the parish began a master plan to repurpose its old sanctuary as a parish hall and build a new worship complex next door. The new neo-Gothic church, with reused stained glass from a downtown Mobile parish, was dedicated in April 2021.

Architecture & New Church (2021)

The new St. Ignatius Church, designed by Quina Grundhoefer Architects, was completed in April 2021 after five years of design, fundraising, and construction. Its neo-Gothic exterior — brick façade, buttresses, limestone trim, and slate roof — and its interior reuse of stained glass salvaged from an older downtown-Mobile parish have made it a notable addition to the Spring Hill streetscape. A Renkus-Heinz steerable-array system was installed to keep speech and music intelligible throughout the traditional sanctuary.

St. Ignatius Catholic School

St. Ignatius Catholic School is a parish ministry founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1952 and now operated by lay educators on the same 13-acre Spring Hill campus. Today it serves about 642 children from four months old through eighth grade, including an Early Learning Center Nursery & Preschool and K–8 grades. The school is one of eight Catholic elementary schools in the Mobile and Baldwin Deanery of the Archdiocese of Mobile. Principal Tori Yarbrough-Miller — a Spring Hill College graduate, former 6th-grade teacher at the school, and Mobilian Catholic-school alumna — has led the school since 2016.

Faith Formation & Youth

The parish supports lifelong faith formation across every age. Adults preparing for initiation or full communion join OCIA (the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults), children participate in the Children's Liturgy of the Word during the 10:00 AM Mass, and a nursery is open during that same Mass for the youngest members of the parish family. Teens are welcomed into the LifeTeen program, anchored by the 5:30 PM Sunday evening Mass.

Outreach & Charity

St. Ignatius lists meaningful outreach among the core ways parishioners serve one another and the wider Mobile community. From food and assistance ministries to parish-organized service opportunities, the parish invites members to live out the Gospel beyond the church walls in the spirit of its patron, St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Accessibility & Visiting

St. Ignatius welcomes visitors and parishioners with mobility and hearing needs. Four assistive hearing devices are stored in the sacristy and can be checked out before Mass through an usher or Shelia Wilkins. Visitors should note new on-street 'No Parking' signs and parking-ticket enforcement by the City of Mobile; overflow parking is available in the back lot behind the Marian Center.

Parish Staff & Pastor

The parish is led by Reverend W. Bry Shields ('Father Bry Shields'), who has served as pastor of St. Ignatius while also serving as president of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School since 1989. In October 2025 he announced his retirement from McGill-Toolen effective June 30, 2026, with Archbishop Mark Rivituso's approval for him to remain full-time as pastor of St. Ignatius beyond that date.
