History
Established in the late 1970s as a mission to serve Christian immigrants from the Levant, St. Elias moved to its current location in Hayward, CA. It serves a diverse community attracted to Eastern Christian worship and spirituality. The parish is part of the Melkite Eparchy of Newton, under Bishop Francois Beyrouti, and is currently in pastoral transition without a permanent priest.
Music
The liturgical services are entirely chanted, with Scripture readings sung in liturgical intonation. The music is drawn from the Melkite Hymnal, compiled in the 1970s by Archimandrite Fr. Cyril Haddad. Hymns are available in English, Arabic, and multiple tones for the Divine Liturgy, Menaion, Triodion, and other services.
