History & Heritage

St. Dominic's roots reach back to the late 19th-century Catholic colonization of southwestern Kansas. The 'St. Dominic's Colonization Society,' promoted by Father Felix Swenberg of Wichita and the Santa Fe Railroad, encouraged Irish, German, and German-Russian Catholic families to settle in the Garden City area. Over time the parish has become a diverse faith community, today served by Rev. Benjamin Green and supported by Dominican Sisters and lay ministers across generations.

St. Dominic Catholic School

St. Dominic Catholic School, at 617 JC Street, is a thriving PreK–6 elementary school in the Diocese of Dodge City. With about 145 students enrolled, the school focuses on educating the whole child — body, mind, and soul — and is fully accredited by the State of Kansas through the KESA process. Students attend parish Mass twice weekly.
