Why belong here

St. Bernard is a faithful, close-knit country parish where every household is known by name, and it offers the simple gift of weekly Sunday Mass in a quiet, rural setting. With a monthly Spanish Mass on the third Sunday, the parish welcomes English- and Spanish-speaking Catholic families from across Edwards and Pawnee counties. Because the parish shares its pastor and faith-formation staff with Sacred Heart of Jesus in Larned, parishioners can tap into a wider cluster of ministries, religious education, and sacramental preparation while still belonging to a small hometown church.

History of the Parish

Catholic life in the Belpre area began in the mid-1880s when Irish and German homesteaders settled between Larned and Belpre and built a simple frame church called St. Agnes, known locally as "The Dublin Church." After a storm damaged it in the late 1890s, the building was taken apart and reassembled on donated land in Belpre, where it was rededicated in April 1901. The parishioners built their first St. Bernard Church in 1906; that structure was later destroyed by fire, and the old St. Agnes building once again served as a temporary place of worship until a new St. Bernard Church was dedicated in 1927.

  • Mid-1880s: St. Agnes (the "Dublin Church") built five miles east of Zook
  • 1899–1901: St. Agnes moved to Belpre and rededicated
  • 1906: First St. Bernard Church dedicated
  • After a fire destroyed the 1906 building, St. Agnes served as a temporary church
  • 1927: Present St. Bernard Church dedicated
